Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pachy- comb. form, -odont comb. form.
Etymology: < pachy- comb. form + -odont comb. form.R. G. Mayne Expos. Lex. (1857) gives a Latin form pachyodon and a French form pachyodonte (both adjectives).
Zoology and Palaeontology.
A. adj.
Having thick or massive teeth; spec. of, relating to, or designating (the dentition of) a bivalve mollusc characterized by one to three heavy, blunt teeth in the hinge of the shell, as typical of the extinct rudists (sometimes classified in an order Pachyodonta). Cf. pachydont adj.
