单词 paddywhack
释义

paddywhackn.

Brit. /ˈpadɪwak/, U.S. /ˈpædiˌ(h)wæk/
Forms: 1700s– paddywhack, 1800s– paddywack.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: paddy n.2, whack n.
Etymology: Apparently < paddy n.2 + whack n., although the semantic motivation for the compound is unclear.References to a ‘celebrated Irish air of Paddy Whack’ are found in the late 1770s. Use in the folk song This Old Man (compare note at sense 3) is apparently of more recent origin. With sense 1b compare slightly later Paddywatch n. at paddy n.2 Compounds 1.
