Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Partly a borrowing from Turkish. Etymons: Persian pādšāh; Ottoman Turkish pādišāh.
Etymology: Partly < Persian pādšāh protecting lord (in Middle Persian pādixšā ) < pād- throne, majesty (of the Shah) + šāh shah n., and partly < Ottoman Turkish pādišāh (Turkish padişah ) sovereign (especially the Ottoman Sultan; < Persian). Compare Urdu pādšā . Compare also Italian padiscià (1542 as patichiach ), Portuguese †patxiah (1553), †padxá (1565), †padixá (16th cent.). Compare pasha n.

(formerly) the Sultan of Turkey, the Shah of Iran (Persia), and the Mogul emperor.Also occasionally extended (spec. by Asians) to any monarch, and sometimes applied in India before 1947 to the British sovereign in his or her capacity as Emperor of India.
