paenulan.

Brit. /ˈpiːnjᵿlə/, U.S. /ˈpinjələ/
Forms: Middle English (1800s historical) penula, 1700s– paenula.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin paenula.
Etymology: < classical Latin paenula sleeveless hooded cloak, often worn in bad weather and on journeys < Hellenistic Greek (Doric) ϕαινόλα cloak, feminine corresponding to the more common (Attic-Ionic) ϕαινόλης < ancient Greek ϕαίνειν to bring to light, make known, reveal (see -phane comb. form) + -όλης, suffix forming nouns. The cloak was so called in Greek because it was generally brightly coloured, white or purple; the corresponding Roman garment tended to be dark in colour.
In Roman History: a sleeveless hooded cloak. Also: an ecclesiastical garment of similar shape, originally worn outdoors by monks and priests and later used by priests as a chasuble.Cf. planeta n. and note s.v. chasuble n.

1846 H. W. Herbert Roman Traitor I. i. 4 The dress which this remarkable looking individual at that time wore, was the penula, as it was called; a short, loose straight-cut overcoat, reaching a little way be-low the knees, not fitted to the shape, but looped by woollen frogs all down the front, with broad flaps to protect the arms, and a square cape or collar.
1868 W. B. Marriott Vestiarium Christianum p. lxii We have abundant evidence in Roman literature of the uses to which the Pænula served, and of its gradual exaltation from a garb of slaves or of peasants to one which even emperors might wear in travelling, and which was expressly prescribed in the fifth century of our era as the dress of senators.
