Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French papier mâché.
Etymology: < French papier mâché (C. G. Le Clerc La chirurgie complette (1695) 265, in a description of a medical dressing) < papier paper n. and adj. + mâché , past participle of mâcher to chew (see masticate v.). Compare earlier paper n. 2b. Compare paper mache n.In form -mashè probably after mash v.1; compare early instructions for making this substance (not yet so named):1671 R. Boyle Some Considerations Usefulnesse Exper. Nat. Philos. (ed. 2) II. x. iv. 33 First, soak a convenient quantity of whitish Paper..then mash it in hot water.
