Origin: A borrowing from Burmese. Etymon: Burmese bədauʔ.
Etymology: < Burmese bədauʔ. N.E.D. (1904) enters this under padouk, which it treats as non-naturalized, and gives only the pronunciation (padɑu·k) /paˈdaʊk/.
Any of various tropical Asian and West African trees of the genus Pterocarpus (family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae)); esp. P. macrocarpus of Burma (Myanmar) and Thailand, P. dalbergioides of the Andaman Islands, P. indicus of Malaysia and the Philippines, and P. soyauxii of West Africa. Also: the hard reddish wood of any of these trees, which resembles rosewood. Frequently with distinguishing word, as Andaman padauk, Burma padauk, Indian padauk.
