Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: pan- comb. form, telegraph n.
Etymology: < pan- comb. form + telegraph n., after Italian pantelegrafo (1856 or earlier) or French pantélégraphe (1858 or earlier).
Now historical and rare.
A form of facsimile telegraph invented by Giovanni Caselli in 1856 for transmitting images along a line connecting two isochronously oscillating pendulums, one of which guides an iron point over the original (written or drawn in non-conducting ink on metallic paper), so setting up equivalent motions in the other, which carries a pencil to reproduce the image.

1863 Sci. Amer. 12 Sept. 166/3 He could tell you, to a semitone, the note of anything sounded, from a dry stick to a shovel. This has been suggested by an article on Caselli's Pantelegraphy, found in the July number of the Paris journal .
