Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: palaestra n., -al suffix1.
Etymology: < palaestra n. + -al suffix1. Compare Italian palestrale (a1357). In sense 2 probably by association with palace n.1, perhaps as a result of misinterpretation of plays in quots. a1425 at sense 1 and a1522 at sense 1 as place n.1
Now rare.
