Etymology: Either < pape, variant of pope n.1 + -ish suffix1, or an alteration (with suffix substitution) of papist adj. Compare German †papisch (17th cent.). Compare slightly earlier popish adj.1
Chiefly derogatory. Now chiefly Scottish and Irish English (northern).
