Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ἀκάρδιος without a heart ( < ancient Greek ἀ a- prefix⁶ + καρδία heart: see cardia n.) + -ac suffix, after acardia n. and cardiac adj. Compare French acardiaque (1847 or earlier).
