Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps an alteration of pankin n., after puncheon n.2 (compare also the form panchon at puncheon n.1 β. forms).
Now English regional.
1. A large shallow earthenware bowl or vessel, wider at the top than at the bottom, used esp. to stand milk in to let the cream separate (cf. pan-mug n. at pan n.1 Compounds 2). Also: a vessel in which to make or store bread.
