Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: white adj., bath n.1
Etymology: < white adj. + bath n.1 In sense 1 after French bain blanc (1791, in the passage translated in quot. 1791, or earlier in this sense). The semantic motivation of sense 2 is unclear.
1. An emulsion of oil and sodium carbonate solution used to prepare cotton for dyeing. Also: a solution of alum and salt used for steeping skins during the preparation of soft white leather. Frequently attributive. Now historical and rare.
