Etymology: < Italian panzarotto (1797), panzerotto (1965 or earlier) < Italian regional (central and southern) panza , variant of pancia belly (see paunch n.1) + -r- , connective element + -otto , augmentative suffix (see -ot suffix); the pasta is so called on account of its swollen shape.In plural forms panzarotti and panzerotti after the Italian plural forms.
An Italian dish consisting of a small folded half-moon or square of pizza or pasta dough, typically filled with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and prosciutto, and deep fried or baked. Chiefly in plural.
