Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian palio, pallio.
Etymology: < Italian palio richly decorated cloth given as a prize to the winner of a race on the occasion of a large public festival in the Middle Ages (a1342–8), race in which this is awarded (1304), variant of pallio kind of cloak worn by the ancient Greeks and Romans (14th cent.) < classical Latin pallium a covering, cover (see pallium n.).In plural form Palii after the Italian plural form.
Any of various traditional horse races held in particular Italian towns; esp. one held every July and August in the city of Siena. Also: the cloth or banner of velvet, silk, etc., awarded to the winner of such a race.
