Pangasinann.adj.

Brit. /ˌpaŋasɪˈnɑːn/, /ˌpʌŋʌsɪˈnɑːn/, U.S. /ˈˌpɑŋɡɑsiˈnɑn/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, Pangasinans, Pangasinenses.
Forms: 1700s Pangasinaman, 1800s Pangasinanes (plural), 1800s– Pangasinan, 1900s– Pangasinán.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly from a proper name. Partly a borrowing from Pangasinan. Etymons: proper name Pangasinan; Pangasinan pangasinan.
Etymology: Partly < the name of the Pangasinan river and province in central Luzon Island in the Philippines, and partly < their etymon Pangasinan pangasinan, literally ‘place used for getting salt’ ( < pang- , instrumental prefix + asín salt + -an , locative suffix), probably via Spanish. Compare Spanish Pangasinan (noun) as the name of the river (1585), denoting the language (1865 or earlier), pangasinana (feminine adjective) designating the language (1862 or earlier), Italian Pangasinana (feminine adjective) designating the language (1708 in a later edition of the passage translated in quot. 1704 at sense A. 1).The river name is attested in English context from the late 16th cent. in a translation of a Spanish source, and the name of the province from the 17th cent. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (pāngāsīnā·n) /pɑːnɡɑːsiːˈnɑːn/.
