单词 parochian
释义

parochiann.adj.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin parochianus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin parochianus (also parrochianus ) (noun) resident of a diocese (from 8th cent. in British sources), resident of a church province (9th cent.), inhabitant of a parish (9th cent.; frequently from 11th cent. in British sources), parish priest (12th cent.; 1259 in a British source), (adjective) of a diocese (6th cent. as parrocianus ), of a parish (7th cent.; frequently from c1080 in British sources) < parochia (see parish n.) + classical Latin -ānus -an suffix. Compare earlier parishen n.1It is unlikely that the isolated early Middle English form parochian (see quot. ?c1225 at parishen n.1) shows an early example of the present word.
