Etymology: < post-classical Latin passionarium martyrology (9th cent.; from 1245 in British sources; also passionarius ) < classical Latin passiōn- , passiō passion n. + -ārium -ary suffix¹. Compare Middle French passionnier, passionnaire, passionner (13th cent. in Old French as passioner; French passionnaire), Old Occitan pessaniore (1401, probably transmission error), passionaire (1417), Catalan passioner (1466 as passionari), Spanish †pasionario (1112 as passionario), Italian passionario (a1498).
