Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin passionarium.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin passionarium martyrology (9th cent.; from 1245 in British sources; also passionarius ) < classical Latin passiōn- , passiō passion n. + -ārium -ary suffix1. Compare Middle French passionnier, passionnaire, passionner (13th cent. in Old French as passioner; French passionnaire), Old Occitan pessaniore (1401, probably transmission error), passionaire (1417), Catalan passioner (1466 as passionari), Spanish †pasionario (1112 as passionario), Italian passionario (a1498).
Christian Church.
A book containing accounts of the sufferings of saints and martyrs, for reading on their feast days; a martyrology. In early use also (occasionally): a written account of a particular saint's life.
