Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: actinia n., -oid suffix.
Etymology: < actin- (in actinia n.) + -oid suffix, after scientific Latin Actinoida, former group name ( J. D. Dana Zoophytes (1846) 16; later also Actinoidae, Actinoidea). Compare also scientific Latin actinoides (1814 as specific epithet).
Zoology. Now rare.

Designating polyps (corals and anemones) of a kind resembling or typified by the genus Actinia, having the internal cavity divided by radial partitions (formerly classified in a group Actinoida).The term has been applied to all corals and anemones (contrasted with hydroid; = class Anthozoa) or taken to exclude soft corals and sea pens (contrasted with alcyonoid; = subclass Zoantharia or Hexacorallia).
