Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek παραμέση.
Etymology: < ancient Greek παραμέση the string above the mese, the lowest note in the higher of a pair of disjunct tetrachords < παρα- para- prefix1 + μέση mese n.3 Compare post-classical Latin paramese (14th cent. in British sources), French †paramèse (1572 as paramese in the passage translated in quot. 1603).Recorded slightly earlier in an English text in a Greek context:1597 T. Morley Plaine & Easie Introd. Musicke 198 (table) Paramese. Not fully naturalized in English. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (păræ·mĭsī) /pəˈræmɪsiː/.
Ancient Greek Music.
The note immediately above the mese (mese n.3); the lowest note of the higher of a pair of disjunct tetrachords; (in the Greater Perfect System) the lowest note of the third tetrachord from the bottom. Hence occasionally: the fifth string (counting from the bottom) of an eight-stringed lyre (now rare).
