Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French passe-pied.
Etymology: < French passe-pied (1558 in Middle French; 1532 in Middle French as passepyés ) < passe- (see pass- comb. form) + pied foot (see pied-à-terre n.).
Now historical.
A dance in triple time resembling a lively minuet; a piece of music for this dance.Of Breton origin, the passepied was a popular dance in the 17th and 18th centuries.
