Etymology: Partly < post-classical Latin parastata, feminine singular of parastatus (in glandulae parastatae ) (1578 or earlier), and partly < its etymon Hellenistic Greek παραστάτης, plural παραστάται testicles, seminal vessels (already in ancient Greek in sense ‘a person who stands near’) < ancient Greek παρα- para- prefix¹ + the stem of ἱστάναι to stand (see stand v.) + -της, suffix forming agent nouns.
