Etymology: < French pardessus (1810 in this sense), use as noun of par-dessus (adverb) over, above < par (see per prep.) + dessus over, upon, above (12th cent. in Old French as desus ; < classical Latin dēsūrsum (frequently dēsūsum ) from above (condemned by Quintilian as a barbarism; subsequently attested from Vetus Latina) < from (see de- prefix) + sūrsum above, on high (see sursum- prefix), probably after dēsuper from above).
