Etymology: < classical Latin parentātiōn-, parentātiō performance of the rites at the tombs of parents or relatives < parentāt- , past participial stem of parentāre (see parentate v.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare French †parentation (1605). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pēərĕnt-, pærĕntēi·ʃən) /pɛərənt-/ /pærənˈteɪʃən/.
Obsolete.
The performance of the funeral rites of parents or relatives. Hence, more generally: a memorial service or observance for the dead.
