Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps an alteration of, or transmission error for, Anglo-Norman parentee, parentie, Anglo-Norman and Middle French parenté parentage (c1050 in Old French as parentet ; in Anglo-Norman also in senses ‘family’, ‘relatives’; French parenté kinship, consanguinity, (regional also) relatives) < post-classical Latin parentatus (a1039 in a Spanish source in sense ‘relationship by marriage’) < classical Latin parent- , parēns parent n. + -ātus -ate suffix1.The alteration may be for the purpose of rhyme (compare quot. c14601); compare also -ine suffix4.
