Etymology: < post-classical Latin participativus participative adj. + -ly suffix2. Compare post-classical Latin participative (c1235 in a British source), Middle French, French participativement (1519). Compare later participative adj.In the first half of the 16th cent. use of the Latin adverb participative is found in English contexts. Quot. 1651 records a distinction that is elsewhere in the same text attributed to J. D. Du Perron (1556–1618). The source translated in quot. 1767 claims to render the terminology of Thomas Aquinas.
