Etymology: < pearl n.1 + -er suffix1; in later use also < pearl v.1 + -er suffix1. Compare earlier pearling n.2Attested earlier as a surname: Thomas le Perler (1312), apparently in sense ‘person who trades in (real or artificial) pearls’, although it is uncertain whether this example should be interpreted as showing an English or an (otherwise unattested) Anglo-Norman word.
A person who dives or fishes for pearls; an employer of pearl divers; a person who trades in pearls. Also: a small boat used for pearl diving.
