释义

peerieadj.n.

Brit. /ˈpɪəri/, U.S. /ˈpɪri/, Scottish English /ˈpirɪ/
Forms: 1800s– peerie, 1800s– pirie (Orkney), 1900s perrie (Shetland, perhaps transmission error), 1900s– peeri (Orkney and Shetland), 1900s– peery, 1900s– pierie (Orkney), 1900s– piri (Shetland), 1900s– pirri (Shetland).
Origin: Probably a borrowing from Norn.

Compare peedie adj.Occasional attestations outside Orkney, Shetland, and Caithness (chiefly in hypocoristic contexts and reduplicative formations, e.g. peerie-weerie ) may represent a different word; perhaps compare peewee n.2 and adj., peelie adj.
