单词 patoun
释义

patounn.

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: petun n.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps an alteration of petun n. N.E.D. (1904) suggests derivation < Middle French, French †paston lump of dough, pellet of paste used as chickenfeed (1483; now pâton ; < paste paste n. + -on , diminutive suffix (compare -oon suffix)), but the context makes this unlikely. Perhaps compare Older Scots patoune (perhaps) a kind of confection (one isolated attestation; of unknown origin):1495 in J. Stuart Extracts Council Reg. Aberdeen (1844) I. 57 Thare salbe gevin to our souerane In xxiii in wyne, xix of patoune iiii lib. 10s., xii lib. skorcheatis, xxxvi s.
Obsolete. rare.
Perhaps: = petun n.
