Etymology: < classical Latin patruēlis child of a person's paternal uncle, use as noun of masculine (or feminine) of patruēlis of or belonging to a paternal uncle < patruus father's brother, paternal uncle ( < patr- , pater father (see pater n.2) + -uus, suffix forming adjectives and nouns) + -ēlis, suffix forming adjectives. Compare post-classical Latin patruolus brother's son, nephew (in an undated text in Du Cange). Compare Anglo-Norman patruel uncle, also as adjective in sense ‘paternal’.Compare later isolated borrowing of classical Latin patruēlis as adjective in brother patruel (after classical Latin frāter patruēlis):1870 L. H. Morgan Syst. Consanguinity iii. 21 He is described as patrui filius, but he was also called a brother patruel, frater patruelis.
