Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French paturon.
Etymology: < French paturon (P. Lyonet Recherches sur l'anat. et les métamorphoses de différentes espèces d'insectes (a1789, published 1832) 76) < ancient Greek πατεῖν to tread, of unknown origin + οὐρά tail (see uro- comb. form2) + French -on , diminutive suffix (compare -oon suffix).
Zoology.
The expanded basal segment of an arachnid's chelicera, against which the fang articulates.
