Etymology: Shortened < skapaug, early variant (probably with stress on final syllable) of scuppaug n.: see -y suffix6. Perhaps influenced by porgy n. if the latter is not of the same origin. Compare scup n.2
U.S. regional (north-eastern). Now rare.
The scup or porgy, Stenotomus chrysops (family Sparidae), of the Atlantic coast of North America.

1848 J. R. Bartlett Dict. Americanisms Porgy or Paugie.., a fish of the sparus family, common in the waters of New England and New York... It is singular that one half the original name, scup, should be retained in Rhode Island for this fish, and the other half, paug, changed into paugie or porgy, in New York.
1884 G. B. Goode in G. B. Goode et al. Fisheries U.S.: Sect. I 386 About New York the second syllable of the abbreviated Indian name has been lengthened into ‘Paugy’ or ‘Porgy’.
1911 Rep. Comm. U.S. Bureau Fisheries 1908 315/2 Scup (Stenotomus chrysops)... Common local names are ‘scuppaug’, ‘paugy’, ‘porgy’, ‘pogy’ [etc.].
