Etymology: < ancient Greek πεδιονόμος dwelling in the plain ( < πεδίον plain (see pedion n.) + -νόμος , combining form < the stem of νέμειν to manage, also to dwell: see nomos n.) + -ite suffix1. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pediˌǫ·nŏməit) /pɛdɪˈɒnəmaɪt/.
Obsolete. rare.
An inhabitant of a plain, a dweller in a plain.
