单词 pavé
释义

pavén.1adj.

Brit. /ˈpaveɪ/, U.S. /pɑˈveɪ/
Forms: late Middle English paue, 1700s– pavé, 1800s pavvy, 1800s– pavée, 1900s– pave.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pavé.
Etymology: < Middle French, French pavé pavement (early 13th cent. in Old French in an isolated attestation; subsequently from 1462), large slab of an item of food (1868 in Littré), use as noun of pavé , past participle of paver pave v.; reborrowed in 18th cent. Compare Old Occitan, Occitan pavat . Compare earlier pavement n.In phrase on the pavé after French sur le pavé (1637 or earlier in estre sur le pavé to be on the street). In form pavée after the French feminine form. The form pavvy suggests that a pronunciation with the stress on the first syllable may have been possible in 19th-cent. British usage. N.E.D. (1904) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (pave) /pave/.
A. n.1
1. A paved road or path, a pavement; (in later use) esp. one constructed of small paving stones or cobbles. Also: the stones forming such a surface. In later use chiefly in French contexts.
