单词 pentangle
释义

pentanglen.

Brit. /ˈpɛntaŋɡl/, U.S. /ˈpɛnˌtæŋɡ(ə)l/
Forms: Middle English pentangel, Middle English pentaungel, 1500s pentangell, 1600s–1800s pentagle, 1600s– pentangle.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: penta- comb. form, angle n.2
Etymology: < penta- comb. form + angle n.2 With sense 1 compare later pentacle n. With sense 2 compare pentagon n., and triangle n., quadrangle n., etc., and also post-classical Latin pentangulum (1634 in the passage translated in quot. 1658 at sense 2), Italian †pentangulo (1304–7 in Dante).Quot. c1400 at sense 1 is the earliest attestation in English of a word for the five-pointed star. The similar-looking, synonymous pentacle n. and its French and post-classical Latin equivalents post-date it by more than a century and are therefore unlikely to have influenced the original formation. The only term ultimately going back to antiquity is pentagram n., which first appears in English in the 19th cent. (pentagonon n. derives from a Hellenistic Greek word which only meant ‘pentagon’: see pentagon n.). In form pentagle probably influenced by pentacle n. With pentangle of Solomon compare pentacle of Solomon n. at pentacle n.
