Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pēlamyd-, pēlamys, pēlamid-, pēlamis.
Etymology: < classical Latin pēlamyd-, pēlamys (also pēlamid-, pēlamis) a young or small tunny < ancient Greek πηλαμύδ-, πηλαμύς, of uncertain origin, perhaps a loanword. In form palamede probably after French †palamide (1611 in Cotgrave); compare Old Occitan, Occitan palamida (1445), Spanish palamida (1529). In form palmita probably after Italian palamita (15th cent.; compare Sicilian plamiti, plural (1534)). Compare Middle French, French pélamide (1552).In discussions of ancient writers generally in forms pelamys or pelamyd, representing the Latin or Greek word.
Frequently historical.
A young or small bonito or tunny; spec. the Atlantic bonito, Sarda sarda.
