Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pelargonium.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Pelargonium (C. L. L'Héritier de Brutelle Geraniologia (1787) Plate 7) < ancient Greek πελαργός stork (see Pelargic adj.) + an ending apparently modelled on that of geranium geranium n., on the model of which the word was apparently formed (geranium being ultimately < ancient Greek γέρανος crane, both names alluding to the slender beak of the plants' fruit; compare crane's-bill n.).

Any of numerous plants of the genus Pelargonium (family Geraniaceae), chiefly native to southern Africa; esp. any of the cultivated varieties grown for their brightly coloured flowers and often variegated or aromatic leaves (the popular name being geranium).
