Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin perēmpt-, perimere.
Etymology: < classical Latin perēmpt-, past participial stem of perimere to destroy, kill, cancel out, annul < per- per- prefix + emere to buy, purchase, originally to take (see emption n.). Compare peremption n. 2. Compare also earlier peremptory adj., peremptor adj.
Chiefly Civil Law. Now chiefly U.S.
transitive. To do away with or quash (a thing, esp. a legal process or suit).
