Origin: A borrowing from Nisenan and Sierra Miwok, combined with an English element. Etymons: Nisenan pe·n , Sierra Miwok ʔoṭi· , -an suffix.
Etymology: < Nisenan pe·n two + Sierra Miwok ʔoṭi· two (e.g. Northern Sierra Miwok ʔoṭī·koʔ (nominative) two (things)) + -an suffix.Coined by R. B. Dixon & A. L. Kroeber (compare quot. 1912 at sense A.).

Also: a proposed higher-order grouping comprising California Penutian, Coast Oregon Penutian, Plateau Penutian, Chinookan and Tsimshian, and (in the usage of some scholars) certain other language groupings.Coast Oregon Penutian is a proposed language grouping comprising Alsean, Siuslaw, and Coosan.
