Etymology: < scientific Latin Peltogaster, genus name (H. Rathke 1843, in Nova Acta Leopoldina 20 244) < ancient Greek πέλτη pelta n. + scientific Latin -o- -o- connective + ancient Greek γαστήρ stomach (see -gaster comb. form). Compare French peltogaster (1875 in the passage translated in quot. 1876).

A rhizocephalan cirripede of the genus Peltogaster, parasitic on hermit crabs; (in form Peltogaster) the genus itself.
