Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish pelú.
Etymology: < Chilean Spanish pelú (1789–94 or earlier) < Mapuche pəlu.
A small tree, Sophora cassioides (family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae)), found chiefly in southern Chile. Also pelu tree.

1884 W. Miller Dict. Eng. Names Plants Pelu-tree, Sophora tetraptera.
1890 Cent. Dict. (at cited word) Pelu, a small tree, Sophora tetraptera, var. Macnabiana, of southern Chili and Patagonia. Its wood is very hard and durable, and much used for wheel-cogs and similar objects.
2001 N.Z. Jrnl. Bot. 39 167/1 Pelu has previously been known as S. microphylla, a name now considered to belong to a New Zealand endemic, and also as S. macnabiana.
