Etymology: < peridot n. + -ite suffix1. In sense 1 after French péridotite (P. L. A. Cordier & C. D. d'Orbigny Descr. des Roches (1868) ii. 118). In sense 2 after German Peridotit (H. Rosenbusch Mikrosk. Physiogr. (1877) II. 522).
Geology.
1. A dolerite containing a high proportion of olivine. Obsolete.
