Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: pepper n., -er suffix1.
Etymology: < pepper n. + -er suffix1, probably after Anglo-Norman peverer. Compare Old French, Middle French pevrier (c1200; French †poivrier (now only in senses ‘pepper plant’, ‘pepper castor’)), Old Occitan pebrier, and post-classical Latin piperarius (frequently from 1180 in British sources).
Now archaic and historical.
A dealer in pepper and other spices; a grocer.The London Company of Grocers was formerly known as the London Company of Pepperers, changing its name in the late 14th cent.
