A pungent, typically hairless, and often purple-tinged hybrid mint, Mentha × piperita, with long interrupted spikes of lilac flowers, which is cultivated for its essential oil and is frequently naturalized on damp ground in Europe and elsewhere. Mentha × piperita originated in the late 17th cent. as a natural hybrid between spearmint, Mentha spicata, and water mint, M. aquatica. oil of peppermint n. = sense A. 3.
