Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: French péripatéticien.
Etymology: Shortened < Middle French péripatéticien (1370–2; French péripatéticien) < classical Latin peripatēticus peripatetic n. and adj. + French -ien -ian suffix; compare -ician suffix. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (-ī·ʃiăn) /-ˈiːʃ(ɪ)ən/.
