Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin peracūtus.
Etymology: < classical Latin peracūtus very sharp (of intellect), very piercing (of sound), in post-classical Latin also very acute, of a disease (c1170 in a British source; c1230–50 in the passage translated in quot. a1398) < per- per- prefix + acūtus acute adj.
Now chiefly Veterinary Medicine.
Of a disease: very acute or severe, and often rapidly fatal.
