单词 phalaena
释义

phalaenan.

Brit. /fəˈliːnə/, U.S. /fəˈlinə/
Inflections: Plural phalaenae.
Forms: 1600s phalaina, 1600s– phalena, 1700s– phalaena.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin phalaena.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin phalaena (1634 in the passage translated in quot. 1658 at main sense; in scientific Latin as group name (1758 or earlier)) < Hellenistic Greek ϕάλαινα, variant (in late manuscripts) of ϕάλλαινα a moth, of uncertain origin (see note). Compare French phalène (1568 in Middle French). It has been suggested that Hellenistic Greek ϕάλλαινα derives from Byzantine Greek ϕάλλη a moth, use as noun of the feminine of a variant of Hellenistic Greek ϕαλιός white ( < the same base as Byzantine Greek ϕαλός white: see phalaris n.) + -αινα, suffix forming feminine nouns.
Entomology. Now historical.
Originally: a moth. In later use: a member of the former group Phalaena of moths, originally including all moths other than hawkmoths and later restricted to the geometrids and some pyralids; also ( Phalaena), the group itself.
