释义

pensionnatn.

Brit. /ˈpɒnsjɒna(t)/, U.S. /ˈpɛnʃəˌnɑt/, /ˈpɑnsiəˌnɑ(t)/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pensionnat.
Etymology: < French pensionnat boarding school (1788) < pension pension n. (compare sense 6) + -at -at suffix. With sense 1 compare German Pensionat (1826 in this sense, usually denoting a boarding school for girls; now chiefly in Mädchenpensionat ), Italian pensionato (a1835 or earlier in this sense). Compare earlier pension n. 7.Not fully naturalized in English. Sense 2, which is not attested in French or other Romance languages, is probably due to confusion with sense 1.
