Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French perit; Latin perītus.
Etymology: < Middle French perit (a1403) or its etymon classical Latin perītus experienced, expert, properly past participle of *perīrī (only attested in compounds, as experīrī to make trial of: see expert adj.1).With peritely adv. at Derivatives compare Middle French peritement (c1510 in an apparently isolated attestation).
Obsolete.
Experienced, knowledgeable; expert, skilled.
