Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek περιτομή.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek περιτομή circumcision < ancient Greek περι- peri- prefix + τομή (see -tome comb. form). With sense 1 compare post-classical Latin peritome (1528) and French péritomie (1991 in the source translated in quot. 1993 at sense 1). With sense 2 compare French péritomie (1887 or earlier).The first doctor to practise the technique denoted by sense 2 was Salvatore Furnari (1808–66), who apparently called his operation tonsure conjonctivale (1862); compare quot. 1869 at sense 2.

2. Ophthalmology. Excision of a strip of conjunctiva around the cornea; an instance of this. Also called syndectomy.

1869 G. Lawson Dis. Eye (1874) 19 Syndectomy—Peritomy.—This operation was first practised by Dr. Furnari, of Paris, in 1862. It consists in excising a band of conjunctiva and subconjunctival tissue..from around the cornea.

2003 Ophthalmic Res. 35 306 Surgery consisted of a conjunctival peritomy of 8 mm in the superior limbus followed by extensive subconjunctival dissection.
