Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: peri- prefix, τρηματ-, τρῆμα.
Etymology: < peri- prefix + ancient Greek τρηματ-, τρῆμα perforation, hole (see trematode adj. and n.); in sense 1 after French péritrème (J. V. Audouin Hist. des insectes nuisibles (1842) i. ii. 67).With sense 2 compare earlier peristome n.
Zoology.
1. A small chitinous ring or tube surrounding a spiracle or breathing hole in some insects and arachnids, esp. acari.
